Lucifer: The Wolf Beneath the Tree

Lucifer, Vol. 8: The Wolf Beneath the Tree (Lucifer, #8)Lucifer, Vol. 8: The Wolf Beneath the Tree by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The cosmos is unraveling now that God has left and the Word is fading from all of His creation. Since it appears to be the End Time, Fenris the Wolf returns to fulfill his destiny as part of Ragnarok. Lucifer, Michael, and Elaine join forces to stop him from reaching Yggdrasil, the World Tree, but things go very, very wrong. After watching Lucifer win through wit and foresight for seven books, it ups the ante considerably to see him struggle and even fail, making this one of the most exciting arcs yet. But the highlight of this collection may be the extended 50th issue, which tells the story of Lilith and Samael before he became Lucifer, and reveals the true reason he turned his back on Heaven. This series just continues to rock my world!

Lucifer: Exodus

Lucifer, Vol. 7: Exodus (Lucifer, #7)Lucifer, Vol. 7: Exodus by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two titans storm the Silver City hoping to fill the void left by God when He left for parts unknown. It’s up to Lucifer to stop them from taking the throne, but to do that he’ll need his reluctant brother Michael’s help. All immortals are ordered to leave Lucifer’s new cosmos to make sure they don’t try the same thing the titans did, which affords the reader an opportunity to see Elaine, Mona, Mazikeen, and the fallen cherubs in action on their own (these side characters are quickly becoming favorites of mine). In the midst of all this, Mike Carey tells the touching tale of the creature Thole and his human friend from the other side of Lucifer’s gate, once again showing that even monsters have hearts. I mentioned before how much I like it when minor characters from previous arcs reappear in greater roles, but another thing I’m really liking in this series is how each arc leads seamlessly into the next.

Lucifer: Manions of the Silence

Lucifer, Vol. 6: Mansions of the SilenceLucifer, Vol. 6: Mansions of the Silence by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ever wonder where eternal creatures like angels and demons go when they get “killed”? I have! According to Mike Carey’s LUCIFER comics, they go to a place called Mansions of the Silence. And in this, the sixth volume of the collected series, Lucifer and several of the supporting characters from the series so far take a trip to the Mansions of Silence to rescue the spirits of Elaine and Mona. One of the things I’m really enjoying about LUCIFER is how minor characters from earlier arcs will often reappear and take on more important roles later. Carey continues to elicit empathy from the reader for these characters. too, which is no small feat when most of them are demons.

Lucifer: Inferno

Lucifer, Vol. 5: InfernoLucifer, Vol. 5: Inferno by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lucifer returns to Hell for his duel with Amendiel severely weakened by the recent attack against him; Mazikeen goes looking for the magic feathers that will restore Lucifer to full strength, and runs into a very dangerous ex-boyfriend; and Samson from the Bible investigates Elaine’s death. However, the best story in this volume is the standalone “Bearing Gifts,” in which a demon asks a devoutly religious man for help. It’s touching and beautifully told. At this point, LUCIFER has become one of my favorite comics series ever.
