Dark Fusions

Dark Fusions: Where Monsters Lurk!Dark Fusions: Where Monsters Lurk! by Lois H. Gresh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s probably gauche to review an anthology you have a story in, so let’s ignore mine and talk about the rest of the book. I found this to be a pretty strong and varied assortment of dark, weird tales. The standouts for me were “Beneath Their Shoulders” by Norman Prentiss, a tricky tall tale where you can’t trust everything the protagonist sees; “Ignis Fatuus” by Scott David Aniolowski & T.E. Grau, a well written trickster story; “When the Stars Run Away” by Ann K. Schwader, whose short fiction continues to impress me, this time with a dark science fiction tale that mixes the personal with the apocalyptic; and “Sidestep” by Lynn Spitz, another dark science fiction story, this one examining what happens when time travel goes off the rails. Editor Lois H. Gresh did a good job selecting a wide variety of stories to fit the “dark and weird” theme. You’ll likely find at least a few here to your taste.

The Christmas Haul, Part 1

This Christmas, I received $100 in Barnes & Noble gift cards. So what did I use them to buy? Glad you asked! Here’s what I walked out of the Union Square B&N with yesterday:

A graphic novel I’ve been meaning to read for some time now.

I was shocked when I discovered this wasn’t already on my shelf.

This one has been on my want-to-read list since it came out nearly ten years ago.

I found this novel by science fiction author Nick Mamatas in the New Science Fiction section. I assume it’s got something to do with robots and spaceships, yeah?

I can’t redeem a gift card without buying a Doctor Who video, now can I? The Brain of Morbius is one of the serials that absolutely hooked me on the show as a wee lad. “Frankenstein in space,” basically, plus a talking brain in a jar. What’s not to love?

One of the best Westerns ever made. Of course, it’s been ages since I’ve seen it, so I’m bracing myself for any of that late-1960s casual racism and sexism I may not have picked up on when I last saw it in my teens.

Coming soon: The Christmas Haul, Part 2, in which I show what I was able to buy with my Amazon gift cards!

Remember Why You Fear Me

Remember Why You Fear Me: The Best Dark Fiction of Robert ShearmanRemember Why You Fear Me: The Best Dark Fiction of Robert Shearman by Robert Shearman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An astounding collection of funny, absurd, surreal, dark stories. While most of the stories focus on the disintegration of a couple or family, Shearman’s unique imagination takes you places you’ve never been before. I can see why he’s won so many awards, and why this collection in particular is getting so much attention. These stories are gems. Highly recommended.
